Decide and take the first step.

During my 5th year of medical training in Ghana, I found myself at a crossroads, contemplating a move to either the USA or the UK. This was driven by my desire for exposure to a different and more advanced healthcare system.

How did I make this decision? I read blogs like you are doing now about the steps each process entails, visited the official websites of licensing bodies like the GMC, spoke with experienced physicians who had taken similar steps, assessed the cost and took into consideration family factors. Being a Christian, I meditated on it to ensure I was at peace with my decision.

This is where the decision-making begins. You have to weigh your options and analyse the influencing factors. I will discuss how I did mine.

Firstly, I read blogs authored by doctors who had embarked on similar journeys. Platforms like "RoadtoUK" and Naseer’s journey provided invaluable insights into the processes involved.

Not only did I stop there, I recognised the need for personalised guidance hence I sought advice from experienced physicians who had undergone this transition. One of the best decisions I made was in selecting my PLAB 2 prep academy and this allowed me to get ready and pass the exam with just 4 days of preparation after the course. I could not have done this without personalised guidance.

Moreover, I diligently explored the official websites of licensing bodies such as the GMC, ensuring I stayed abreast of the latest updates and costs associated with exams and licensing. The UK keeps changing the pathways into various residency training programs hence the need for you to know where to check for updates to ensure you don’t miss out on this information.

Additionally, I took stock of my personal circumstances, considering factors such as family support and financial feasibility. Knowing that I had a supportive uncle in London alleviated concerns about accommodation costs, facilitating my decision to pursue the PLAB (soon to be UKMLA) exam.

Despite meticulous planning and analysis, the pivotal moment and most important factor occurred when I took the first tangible step—passing the English proficiency test (IELTS/OET). This action infused me with the momentum to keep going without looking back. This step is everything. So, despite all the planning, talking and analysis, acting is what makes the difference. I, therefore, encourage you to begin your journey by taking that first step.

  • Make a decision.
